History Of Gaziantep

Dülük, located near Gaziantep, is the oldest city in this region. According to archaeological excavations, people have lived in this city since the Paleolithic period. The Romans established a town near Dülük, which they named Antiochia ad Taorum. The city remained under the rule of Seljuks, Mamluk State, Dulkadiroğulların, and Ottomans throughout its long-established history. Gaziantep used as a Sanjak center during the First World War. After the Armistice of Mondros, the Ottoman Empire officially ended. The people of Gaziantep made an intense effort and achieved great success in the liberation struggle that started after that. Antep, the scene of one of the most glorious resistances in history, was awarded the title “Gazi” by receiving the praise of Mustafa Kemal after the successful end of the liberation struggle. He was awarded the metropolitan title in 1987.
