Southeastern
Southeastern Anatolia region is one of the seven geographical areas of Turkey. It is located in the north of Iraq and Syria, south of eastern Anatolia, east of the Mediterranean region and west of Iran. Eastern Anatolia and the Mediterranean areas and neighboring Southeastern Anatolia, the smallest district in terms of surface area. The area is 57.000 km2 and covers 7.5% of Turkey. It has borders with Syria and Iraq. The southern foothills of the Southeastern Taurus Mountains, which extend like an arc, from its border with the Eastern Anatolia region. The region is separated from the Mediterranean region by the Gaziantep Plateau.
History Of Southeastern Anatolia
The history of the Southeast dates back to the 10.000 BC. Communities of different religions and tribes have lived here for centuries. These lands, known as the upper part of Mesopotamia, were home to many ancient civilizations. It is known that Hittites, Arabs, Assyrians, Hurrians, Persians, Mitanni's, Alexander The Great, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans ruled over this geography throughout the history of southeastern Anatolia. Greeks, Armenians, and Syriacs lived in many parts of southeastern Anatolia. In 1070, it is thought that there were 20 thousand Syriacs, 8 thousand Armenians, 6 thousand Greeks, and Frankish in the region. Armenians and Syriacs in Malatya; Armenians in Adıyaman, Harput, Muş, Bitlis, and Van; Syriacs in Urfa, Mardin, Hasankeyf, Silvan and Diyarbakir laid the historical and cultural foundations of this unique geography.
