Sagalassos

Sagalassos is an ancient city located 7 kilometers from the Ağlasun District of Burdur. Ağlasun, which has a population of more than 8 thousand, provides the increase of tourist demand to the region with the charm of Sagalassos. Sagalassos located close to Burdur and Ağlasun, as well as many others. The ancient city in question is located 110 kilometers from Antalya and 41 kilometers from Isparta. In this respect, it is worth mentioning that many tourists come to Sagalassos from these cities.

Sagalassos, city of lovers and emperors

Sagalassos is an ancient city known as the city of lovers and emperors. The town, called Pisidia in ancient Greece, is located at the foot of the Western Taurus Mountains. Kent discovered in 1706. Old archaeological work started in 1990. Today, archaeological work in the city is still ongoing.

According to the excavations carried out in the region, the traces of the first settlement in Sagalassos date back 12,000 years. Besides, the excavations revealed that the ancient city was an important center of ceramic production in its time. The town is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List with this feature.

Sagalassos located at 1,700 meters above sea level, and one of the buildings that survived to the present day is the theatre. The building has a capacity of 9,000 people, the highest altitude of the ancient city theatre in the world. Also, the city had its best economic, political and social period in the 2nd century BC during the reign of Emperor Hadrian. The most breathtaking structure of the ancient town thought to be the Antonines Fountain. The original statues in front of this fountain are now on display in Burdur Museum. The sculptures in the ancient city of Sagalassos are a replica of the originals.
