History Of Fethiye

Fethiye was known as Telmessos during the Lycian period. The city came under the administration of Menteşeoğulları in 1284 and joined the Ottoman lands in 1424. The sarcophagus-type tombs, considered to be outstanding examples of Lycian art and stonework, exhibit a distinct beauty within the urban fabric of Fethiye. Especially in the garden of the Government House, the necropolis and the examples opposite the pier are noteworthy. Telmessos Theatre was built in the Hellenistic period and destroyed by earthquakes 2. y.y was also rebuilt with Roman style. It planned to have a capacity of about 6,000 people. Restoration works are continuing in the ancient theatre, where excavation work completed with the initiatives of the Fethiye Archaeological Museum.
