History Of Trabzon

Trabzon is known to come from the word" trapezos." This name first penned by the Greek commander Xenophon. Miletosians of Ionian origin went to the Black Sea in the 7th century BC after Western Anatolia and established colonial cities on the coasts. Trabzon considered among these colonies, with the center being Sinop. As a result of the researches carried out in the region, it shows the period before BC as the first foundation of the city. However, the local tribes such as Kolkhs, Drils, Makrons are known to have lived around Trabzon much earlier. In the same century, the Black Sea region suffered the incursions of the Cimmers from the Caucasus and the Scythians after them. However, the question of whether these currents were before or after the founding of the colonies is debatable. In the 6th century BC, Trabzon came under the rule of the Persians and remained in the satraplık called Pont Cappadocia. King Alexander, the great of Macedonia, ended the Persian domination of all Anatolia in 334 BC. During the confusion following Alexander's sudden death, Mithridates established the state of Pontus in the Black Sea with the support of the indigenous people. Trabzon remained within the borders of the Pontus state, which headquartered in Amasya in 280 BC.
