Artvin

Artvin is one of the cities of the Black Sea region with unique beauties. Despite its challenging and rugged geography, Artvin is a city that stands out for its natural beauty, cultural richness, and historical structure. The mountains, whose peaks covered with snow, the valleys and canyons formed by the Coruh River, and the crater lakes formed within the high mountains stand out with their natural beauty.

History Of Artvin

The first people who dominated Artvin were the Hurrians, who were considered the ancestors of the Turks. Starting from 2000 BC, Huris established site states in and around Artvin. From 1360 BC, the region passed into the hands of the Hittite King. In later periods, Artvin located on the Western frontier of the Caucasus-based Scythian state. It was the forerunner of this era of statehood, which the ancient Greek historian Herodotus described as Scythian. The Scythians, who invented the wheel, tamed the horse and performed the first brain surgery in history, captured Artvin, and began using this area as a military base. After the Scythians, the family called Arsaks dominated Artvin.

The Ottoman rule, which began during the reign of Yavuz Sultan Selim, was completed with the conquest of Ardanuç Castle, which was the capital of Atabek in 1551 by Iskender Pasha, one of the Lords of Erzurum during the reign of Suleiman the magnificent. As a result of the war of 1877-1878, the Kemalpaşa parish of Artvin, Ardanuç, Borçka, Şavşat, and Hopa, which was under the agreement of Ayastafanos signed on March 3, 1878, was abandoned to the Russians as compensation for the war. According to the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk signed on March 3, 1918, the Russians withdrew from the territory of Artvin. As a result of the initiatives of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, on February 23, 1921, Artvin was restored to his homeland.
