Sardes is an ancient town located in the SART District of Salihli, Manisa province, Turkey. The ancient city of Sardes is one of the most important ancient cities in Manisa and the Aegean region. Sardes is also known as the capital of an empire that dominated western Anatolia. Sardes is one of the most famous ancient cities in the world. The city, which has no precedent for urban planning, is surrounded by massive defensive walls outside Mesopotamia. The city, which managed to survive to the present day, has a magnificent structure.

History Of Sades

The Sart region and its region have been the scene of various settlements for over 5000 years. In this respect, it understood from the excavations that the area was also a vital settlement center during the Roman and Byzantine periods. The city of Sardes, known as the first place where money printed in the state guarantee, became a wealthy city thanks to agriculture, livestock farming, trade, and gold mining at Paktolos Creek. During the 14th century, starting from the 7th century BC until the 7th century early Byzantine period, Sardes remained a famous city in both transportation and administrative and commercial terms. Sardes, mentioned in the revelation section of the Bible as one of the seven churches in western Anatolia that played an important role in the spread of Christianity to the West, also has a distinct religious significance.

Features Of The Ancient City Of Sardes

Sardes, which is 9 km from the center of Salihli and 82 km from Izmir, is known as the place where the money first printed. It is also the beginning of the famous King's Road in history. The remains of the first theatre known in history have also unearthed in SART. Besides, about 5 km north of Sart, there is a Lydian royal and Noble cemetery consisting of approximately 85 Graves called "Thousand Hills." The Temple Of Artemis, one of the seven temples of western Anatolia, is also located in the town of Sart.
