Pergamon

Bergama is one of the districts of Izmir. With its cultural and historical heritage, Pergamon is known as the 999th in the world, the 13th in Turkey, and the first UNESCO World Heritage site in Izmir. The county can be explained by many descriptions, such as the motherland of the scroll, the city that houses one of the seven churches in Anatolia mentioned in the Bible, and the town of the physician Galenus, father of Pharmacy. Pergamon has the steepest Theatre in the world. For this reason, the International Pergamon Festival, the first local festival in Turkey since 1937, is held in the said Theatre.

About Pergamon

Pergamon, i.e., Bergama, is located on the banks of the graben Valley in the North Aegean, where the Kaikos (Bakırçay) River lies in the East and west direction. The city is surrounded by Pindasos (Kozak) in the north, Asperdenon (Yund) Mountains in the south, and Selinos in the east and ketios Creek in the west. The name of the city, referred to in ancient texts as Pergamon or Pergamonos, means 'fortified place.' Apart from the ancient settlement of Pergamon at the top of Kale mountain, there are many mounds scattered across the Bakırçay Plain. According to the research conducted in these regions, it understood that its history goes back to the ancient Bronze Age (3000 BC). Pergamon's entry into Turkish sovereignty coincides with the 1300s. Pergamon, which came under the rule of Menteşeoğulları in the early 1300s, was under the Turkish government until 1402. However, the region joined the Mongol domination with the Battle of Ankara in 1402. In 1425, Pergamon was again annexed to the Ottoman territory.
